M's letter was transferred to the Department of Mines on 8 January. Gladman had reported his find in 1880 ('Goldfields', Victoria Parliamentary paper, 1859/60, No. A 25) and, based on data that had been provided to the Gold Fields Reward Board by the Mining Department on 4 February 1864 is reported as having received in 1861 a reward of £250 from the Government for his discovery (Wright et al. (1864), pp. 29-30). The details of the register number of M's letter are inconsistent with the reported date of Gladman receiving the award.
