Dear Mr Purchas.
It would be well if early arrangements could be effected for transferring the Deodar seedlings to the Cemetery; whenever the pots are ready we can supply the plants, which are just let to be moved.

At a meeting of the Trustees on 3 December 1861, Purchas 'informed the Board that Dr Mueller had kindly offered to let the Trustees have 3000 seedling Pines if they would go to the expense of the necessary pots — Resolved that the offer of Dr Mueller be accepted and that the best thanks of the board be conveyed to him' (Minute book 1, Melbourne General Cemetery). Letter of thanks not found.
At a meeting on 7 January 1862. the gardener's report was read, 'stating that ... he had received 1000 seedling pines from Dr Mueller, who had stopped the supply for the present. The Secy informed the Board that Dr Mueller had mentioned the above to him, and stated that many of the nurserymen had complained to him about the large gratuitous supply of plants from the Botanic Gardens which interfered with their business, but that he was going to meet the nurserymen on the subject, after which he would communicate with the Secretary.' (Minute book 1).
