MS black-edged; M's sister, Bertha Doughty, died on 7 September 1861.
Dear Mr Ligar.
Mr Hopwood has on very heavy private expense explored the country towards Coopers
Creek for pastoral purposes, but communicated in several letters
unasked
as a friend
secretly
to me the results,
not having as yet legal possession of his new runs, altho' I am in no way but geographically
interested in the matter.

Letters not found.
The wish to communicate with him at all did
not
arise with me
.
I think under the circumstances, whilst reluctantly responding to the request of a
committee member to serve Mr Howitt with the intelligence, I acted as straight forward
as I could, unless I wished to betray the confidence of a friend.

See also C. Ligar to M, 15 November 1861.
Regardfully
yours
Ferd. Mueller
