It is not certain for what purpose the payment was made, but is likely to be for the fencing of a part of the Government House Reserve to enclose a space for the grazing of three cows at the immigration department depot, where Harcourt was the Superintendent and was to undertake the work. The arrangement was discussed in N. Bickford to C. Hodgkinson, 27 June 1861 (D61/5559, unit 77, VPRS 44/P inward registered and unregistered correspondence, VA 538 Department of Crown Lands and Survey, Public Record Office, Victoria).
