M had proposed that Augustus Oldfield accompany the Burke and Wills relief expedition
to the Gulf of Carpentaria as botanical collector; see M to R. Heales, 18 July 1861. In the event, Oldfield did not go, his place being taken by Diedrich Henne. The
expedition had departed, however, on 4 August, so McCoy would have known that Oldfield
had not gone with it. He and M must therefore have been planning some other collecting
expedition for Oldfield.
