Melbourne bot. & zool Garden
3. Aug. 61
Dear Capt. Standish.
Last night some injury is again done to young trees in the domain of this establishment and I would under the circumstances consider it a favor, if you would allow the police of South Yarra for a short while to attend at evening hours at the garden.
We have usually one person on watch, but as the line of trees is long this is scarcely sufficient. Moreover the appearance of an uniformed man of your force is a more powerful check against the mischief.

MS annotated by Standish: 'For Mr Freeman's attention'. F. Standish to M, 6 August 1861 explained why he could not provide police.
Ever your very obedient
Ferd. Mueller.
