Melbourne bot. & zool. Garden,
27. July 1861
Sir
I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to place at the disposal of
the Committee of the zoological Garden the sum of five hundred pounds Sterling, being
the sum sanctioned by government for the "purchase of animals and to defray expenses
connected with their introduction".
1
On 30 July 1861, the Under Secretary, J. Moore, minuted: 'Perhaps the Director would
be good enough to state for the Hon Chief Sec. information the purpose generally for
which the grant is intended to be used'. M replied on 1 August: 'These documents have
been submitted to the Committee of the zoological Garden and Mr Edw. Wilson in the
absence of the honorary Secretary (who was prevented by illness to attend) has written
a memorandum on the last page of these papers, respecting the expenditure already
incurred on the above vote. The remainder of the sum is solicited to meet the expenditure
for importations of animals, daily expected from South Africa, various parts of India,
Europe &c.'
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient and humble servant
Ferd. Mueller.
Hon. Secr. to the zool. Committee.
The honorable the Chief Secretary
