Melbourne bot. & zool Garden
31. Jan 1861
Sir
In reply to your letter of this day I have the honor to inform you, that the advance of £350 made to me has been to an amount of £200 transmitted by Messrs Grice Sumner & Co to India for the purchase of Cashmere goats, whilst the remaining £150 were forwarded by W. Lyall Esq. M.L.A., to China for importing Chinese Sheep for that amount.
I beg further to state, that I understood at the office of the hon. the Chief Secretary, when the authority for drawing the above amount was sanctioned, that the adjustment would only be required towards the end of March, otherwise it would have not been within the reach of possibility to employ the sum in the manner desired by the zoological Committee.
Receipts from Messrs Grice Sumner & Co and from Mr Lyall have a considerable time ago been transmitted to your office.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient and humble servant
Ferd. Mueller.
E. S. Symonds Esq.
Under treasurer, &c &c &c
