d'être informés de l'arrivée à Londres de deux Phascolomes wombats, destinés au Jardin
d'acclimatation du bois de Boulogne, qui sont envoyés à la Société par M. le docteur
Mueller, directeur du Jardin botanique et zoologique de Melbourne. Nous croyons devoir
reproduire ici la lettre par laquelle notre honorable collègue annonçait cet envoi
à M. le Président' [We have just been informed of the arrival in London of two Phascolome
wombats destined for the acclimatization garden at the Bois de Boulogne, that have
been sent to the Society by Dr. Mueller, director of the Botanic and Zoological Garden
at Melbourne. We believe we ought to reproduce here the letter by which our honourable
colleague announced this sending to the President].

Ayant appris par mon excellent ami, M. Ramel, que vous aviez le désir d'ajouter une
paire de Phascolomes wombats à la brillante collection formée par la Société impériale
d'acclimatation, sous votre présidence, j'ai saisi la première occasion qui s'est
présentée de satisfaire à votre désir; j'ai aujourd'hui confié aux soins du commandant
du navire

une paire de ces animaux qui ont vécu plusieurs mois en bonne santé dans notre jardin,
et qui, par conséquent, ont chance d'arriver en bon état dans votre établissement.
J'espère avoir avant peu le plaisir de vous envoyer une seconde et nouvelle espèce
de Wombat de la colonie de l'Australie méridionale, qui se trouve dans le voisinage
des golfes de Spencer et de Saint-Vincent. Je pense que vous permettrez que le nom
de
Phascolome Saint-Hilaire
soit attaché à cette espèce, comme un témoignage de la profonde vénération que j'éprouve
pour ces grands scrutateurs de la nature, portant votre nom, qui ont, depuis plus
d'un demi-siècle, illustré le monde scientifique.

There is a footnote to the printed text at this point, as follows: 'On sait que le
genre Phascolome (Phascolomys) a été établi en 1803 par Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, d'après des individus ramenés
vivants, d'une des premières expéditions françaises autour du monde, par Péron et
Lesueur. Depuis cette époque, on n'avait pas revu en France de Phascolomes vivants'
[It is known that the genus Phascolome (Phascolomys) was established in 1803 by Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire from individuals brought
back alive, by Péron and Lesueur, from one of the first French expeditions around
the world. Living Phascolomes have not been seen again in France since that time].

Having learnt through my excellent friend, Mr Ramel, that you wanted to add a pair of Phascolome wombats
to the splendid collection formed by the Imperial Acclimatisaton Society under your
presidency, I have seized the first opportunity that has presented itself of satisfying your desire; I have today committed to the care
of the commander of the vessel

a pair of these animals which have lived in good health for several months in our
garden, and which, as a result, have a chance of arriving in good condition at your establishment.
I hope before long to have the pleasure of sending you a second, new species of Wombat
from the colony of South Australia, found in the vicinity of Spencer and Saint Vincent
Gulfs. I suppose you will allow the name
Phascolome Saint-Hilaire
to be attached to this species, in testimony to the deep veneration I have for those
great investigators of nature, carrying your name, who have, for more than half a
century, given lustre to the scientific world.
