MS written into minutes of meeting of the Victorian Gardeners' Mutual Improvement Society held on 29 October 1860. The letter was evidently written, however, in early November, the exhibition being
held later that month.
Sir
It having been proposed at the Meeting of the V. G. M. I. Soc.
held on the 29th ult that the members Mr Jno Walters
of the Botanic Gardens and Mr Wm Smith of the zoological gardens should act as judges
at the Horticultural Exhibition to be held on the 22d and 23d inst. I am directed
by the Committee to request that you may be good enough to sanction the absence of
Messrs Smith and Walters from their respective duties for the purpose stated
