Melbourne.
Oct. 5th, 1860.
Sir,
Observing that the Board of Agriculture have determined upon having a practical agriculturist as Secretary, I have the honor to intimate that it is my intention to tender my services.
I am a practical farmer, having been thoroughly drilled from youth to manhood, and farmed extensively on my own account in one of the highest farming districts of England, where I was frequently called upon to take part in arbitrations and valuations; being well versed in the systems of tenants' rights, current in various districts. I have also had the advantage of experience and extended observation in the Colonies. I introduced Leicester sheep into New Zealand, about seventeen years ago, as being peculiarly adapted to the climate and cultivated pasturage of that country. I am well versed in stock breeding, &c., generally, and have frequently used my pen, in this and other countries, in exposing the fallacies of purely theoretical writers, and in furthering the cause of agriculture, by endeavoring to promulgate practical views. A number of my letters and articles have appeared from time to time in the Melbourne papers, principally in the Herald about three or four years ago, and somewhat frequently in the Victorian Agricultural and Horticultural Gazette — that on sheep farming in the September number being the last of that character, one on Pounds in the same paper being also from me.
I am, at present, Town Clerk of Brighton, and Electoral Registrar of the District; having also, in conjunction with such offices, acted as Clerk of Petty Sessions for about fifteen months: being accustomed to official and general correspondence.
The Council I have now the honor of serving, will certify to my clerical capacity, having kindly sanctioned my application without prejudice to my present position; and the Municipal Auditors will also bear testimony with reference to my accounts.
I shall in due time be prepared to furnish testimony of what I have herein set forth, and I desire respectfully to submit, that in forwarding this circular my object is simply to announce my candidature, thereby affording opportunity of enquiry as to my fitness for the office, being strictly desirous not to insult any member by asking for promise of support.
If honoured with the appointment, I shall use the utmost exertion to effect all the good possible, and to do credit to the members who elect me.
I have the honor to be,
Sir, your obedient servant,
ROBT. D. BUST.
