Verehrter Herr Professor.

Mit inniger Freude nehme ich Ihr überaus freundliches Anerbieten an, uns die nordischen Schätze Floras für unser Reichs-Herbarium zu liefern, welche mir umso willkommener sein werden, als solche aus Ihrer Hand kommen. Wenn der erste Band meiner "plants of Victoria", die Thalamifloren in etwa 180 Quartseiten u manche Illustrationen umfassend, vollendet sein wird (was wohl um Weihnachten der Fall sein kann), hoffe ich hinlänglich Musse zu haben, um die reichen Sammlungen von Dubletten zum Vertheilen zu ordnen u soll eine der schönsten Sammlungen denjenigen Instituten Schwedens zufallen, welche einst von dem grossen Linné u jetzt von ebenfalls hochberühmten Männern als Administranten geziert werden.

Von meinen Fragmenta ist eben die 13te No erschienen, von welcher sowie von den letzern vorhergehenden genug an unsern Freund Dr Sonder gesandt werden wird, um Ihrer Akademien Bibliothek mitgetheilt zu werden

Die Bände der "Plants of Victoria" werden Ihrer Regierung regelmässig so wie solche erscheinen durch die unserige mitgetheilt werden

Wenn Ihnen für Ihre grosse agrostographische Arbeit an weitern Beiträgen von Australien liegt, so will ich nicht nur eine genauere Auswahl der dahin gehörigen Dubletten treffen, sondern auch gern als Darlehe Ihnen die Normal Pflanzen des unter meiner Obhut stehenden Reichs-Herbariums übersenden, welches unzweifelhaft jetzt in Bezug auf Australien's Pflanzen das reichste der Welt ist.

Schliessend drücke ich Ihnen, Herr Professor, meine Freude aus, eine direkte Correspondenz mit Ihnen unterhalten zu können, zumal da ich an den Arbeiten der Wissenschaftsmänner in Scandinavien den regsten Antheil nehme, indem ich selbst in fünfjährigen Arbeiten auf die Vegetation des südwestlichsten Scandinaviens Licht zu werfen versuchte (vide Flor. Bot. Zeit)

containing the Thalamiflorae in about 180 quarto pages and many illustrations will be completed (which will probably be the case around Christmas), I hope to have sufficient spare time to sort the rich collections of duplicates for distribution, and one of the most beautiful collections shall be allocated to those Swedish institutes, that were adorned by the great Linnaeus and now also have celebrated men as administrators.

has just been published; sufficient of this and the previous numbers have been sent to our friend Dr Sonder to supply the library of your Academy.

The volumes of the 'Plants of Victoria' will be sent regularly by our Government to yours as they are published.

Only the first volume, B62.03.03, was published. The second volume, B63.16.06, was commenced and five sheets (40 pages) distributed at least to Hooker at Kew, but the project was then abandoned by M, to allow Flora australiensis (Bentham 1863-78) to be given priority. See Lucas (2003), pp. 263-5.

Andersson (1856) includes a number of Australian species but none are attributed to collections by M, despite Wilhelm Sonder's having offered Andersson access to M's grasses (see W. Sonder to N. Andersson, 11 May 1854 (Andersson Saml., Centre for History of Science, Royal Academy of Science, Stockholm).

I will not only make a more specialized selection from my duplicates belonging to this group, but would also be pleased to send you on loan the general collections from the State Herbarium, which is under my care and which is now without doubt the richest in the world in Australian plants.

Finally, esteemed Professor, I wish to express my pleasure, that I shall be able to maintain a regular correspondence with you, particularly as I take the keenest interest in the labours of the Scandinavian scientists, as I myself attempted to throw light on the vegetation of the most south-western part of Scandinavia during five years' work (see Flora Botanische Zeitung).
