Mein lieber Krichauff

Heute erhielt ich von der Colonial Bank eine Anweisung, welche Du durch diese Anstalt mir zu übersenden die Güte hattest.

Möchtest Du so freundlich sein mir mitzutheilen, ob diese Summe von Freund Fischer kommt oder ob selbige ein anderer Erlös ist.

Ich bin eifrig daran, den ersten Band der Flora dieser Colonie zu beenden, so dass ich nur flüchtig schreibe. Das Werk soll Dir gesandt werden, — ich denke um Weihnacht, bis wann ich den Band zu vollenden hoffe. Wieviel Arbeit gehört doch dazu, wenn man etwas critisch Richtiges u genau Beobachtetes produciren will.

Ich habe noch kaum Hand an die Inspection Deines Herbar gelegt, obwohl ich es hin u wieder benutzte. Das Meiste, was es enthält, wäre mir für unsere Sammlung willkommen

Ich glaube schon einmal vorgefragt zu haben, ob Du es mir nicht in toto überlassen möchtest, wenn ich Dir eine Sammlung Australischer Pflanzen sende, die doch in diesem Lande das Nothwendigste für den Botaniker ist.

My dear Krichauff,

Today I received a cheque from the Colonial Bank that you were so kind as to remit to me through this institution.

Could you please tell me whether this amount comes from our friend Fischer,

Ludwig Fischer.

or whether it is from some other proceeds.

I am kept busy finishing the first volume of the flora of this colony,

B62.03.03.

so I only write in haste. The work will be sent to you, I think around Christmas, by which time I hope to complete the volume. How much labour is involved, if one wants to produce something critically correct and precisely observed.

I have barely made a start with the inspection of your herbarium, although I have used it now and then. Most of what it contains would be a welcome to me for our collection.

I believe I have made some preliminary enquiries once before, whether you would not let me have it as a whole if I send you a collection of Australian plants in return, which is, after all, what is most needful for a botanist in this country.

Krichauff's donation of his 'general herbarium of several thousands well preserved plants' was reported in M to J. O'Shanassy, 10 March 1862. Not all these specimens have been indexed in AVH (accessed 14 August 2023). Most of them, collected in 1847 and earlier, are from cultivated plants, recorded as from ‘Ex hort. Kilins’ [from Botanic Garden Kiel], or 'Ex horto bot Berolinensi [from Botanic Garden Berlin]; some are evidently from the University botanic garden, Leipzig. Not all are indigenous to Europe; there are examples of species from North America, Asia, and Australia, and widely cultivated crops of uncertain origin.
