Sir,
I am instructed by the Governor to send you a copy of a Despatch which His Excellency has recently received, thanking you for your communication of the 17th January addressed to His Grace the Duke of Newcastle

On 19 April 1860, the Duke of Newcastle wrote to the Governor of Victoria, Sir Henry Barkly: 'I request that you will acquaint Dr Mueller, the President of the Royal Society of Victoria, that I have received his letter of the 17th January. In conveying my thanks to Dr Mueller for his communication, you will express my gratification at having been the means of assisting in any degree, however small, the cause of Science in Australia' (No. 24, unit 13, p. 183, VPRS 1087, Public Record Office, Victoria).
