Melbourne botanic & zoologic Garden,
4. July 1860.
Sir
In compliance with your request to offer my official opinion in reference to the eligibility of Dr Herm. Beckler as botanical collector to the Victorian expedition,
1
Beckler was appointed medical officer and botanical collector to the Burke & Wills Exploring Expedition, 1860-1.
I have the honor to inform you, that this gentlemen during his university-studies and during a botanical mission for this department to Eastern Australia, has fully acquired the knowledge and experience requisite to secure specimens and institute observations on the plants, which may be noticed during the Victorian expedition, and to furnish thereby the material for their subsequent scientific elucidation.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller,
Gov. Botanist
O'H. Burke Esq.
Commander of the Victorian Expedition.
