[Through a letter kindly communicated to us by Dr F. Mueller, written to the said
gentleman by Mr R. Schomburgk of Buchfelde,
we hear that the famous traveller Sir Robert Schomburgk is at present on an exploration
journey in the interior of Siam, which he is exploring at the expense of the King
of Siam. He is accompanied by two Princes, nephews of the King, and an escort of 200
men, and intends to advance to the Bay of Bengal. He complains that the flora is treating
him badly, as in the tropical winter, the current season there, few plants are in
flower. He is also dissatisfied from an ornithological point of view, there are very
few birds, and the only interesting discovery is the peacock in its wild state. It
is smaller than ours, but its tail is larger and more splendid. — The Leopoldina Academy
in Jena has sent the doctorol diploma to Mr R. Schomburgk of Buchfelde, proof that
the merits of our compatriot have not been forgotten in the homeland.]
