to inform you that complaints have been made that persons are in the habit of smoking
in the Botanical Gardens, and I am desired to call your attention to the circumstance.

M issued instructions to the employees of the Botanic Garden to prohibit smoking in
the grounds (VPRS 226/P1, PROV), and then wrote on 27 June 1860 to inform the Minister
that he had done so (letter registered but not found).
