On 19 June 1860, Davis informed the Castlemaine Municipal Council by letter: 'Pursuant
to a resolution of this Council I applied to Dr Mueller at the Botanical Gardens Melbourne
and obtained a supply of Seeds Plants and Cuttings which I now hold possession of
for the Council. The application was unseasonable inasmuch as he had previously distributed
the greatest variety and best and with every desire to serve this Council he was unable
to contribute more than he has on the present occassion but has kindly promised to
furnish this Council with a further supply of seedling Shrubs in August and in the
early part of next May to furnish the Council to the full amount they may then require
in Plants Seeds Shrubs and Saplings' (Unit 18, VPRS 575, Public Record Office, Victoria).
