Letter not found. The text given here is from the minutes of the Belfast (later Port Fairy) Municipal Council meeting of 16 May 1860, The Superintendent of the local Botanic Gardens, Henry Hedges, wrote on 2 May 1860 with advice on what plants to make application for to the Melbourne Botanic Garden. The Council probably then sent a request to M.

Knight reported M's letter at a Council meeting on 16 May 1860. On 12 June, Samuel Merrick wrote from Melbourne advising that he had sent a box of cuttings from M; these arrived by steamer on 13 June 1860. Then on 4 August 1860, Merrick advised that he had forwarded a case of Blue Gum seedlings from M (Minute book 2, Belfast Municipal Council; Belfast gazette, 8 June 1860, p. 2; Banner of Belfast, 19 May 1860, p. 3).
