MELBOURNE, 27. Febr. 1860.
Sir
A Committee of the Royal Society having been instructed by his Excellency our patron,
to draw up a general report on the resources of this colony as desired on behalf of
the Society of arts in London by the Right Honorable the Secretary of State for the
colonies,
I have been requested by the Committee to solicit, that you will be pleased to sanction
the printing of the above document at the printing Office of the Government in octavo
form, and that you will kindly permit, when once these papers are in type, that an
extra number of 750 copies may be struck off for being appended to the forthcoming
volume of the transactions of the Royal Society.
1
See M to the Council of the Royal Society of Victoria, 9 April 1860.
2
On 6 March 1860 the Under Secretary, J. Moore, instructed the Government Printer,
J. Ferres, to print the report as requested. Ferres asked in return on 14 March: 'Will
the Hon. the Chief Secretary be pleased to state how many copies, in addition to the
750, herein authorised, are required'; the file does not include the answer to his
question. Printed copies of the report (B60.14.07) were available in time for M to
send one with M to W. Hooker, 20 April 1860, and copies were included in bound copies of vol. 4 of Transactions of the Philosophical Institute of Victoria as an appendix, once Part 2 of the volume was issued in June 1860.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient & humblest servant
Ferd. Mueller,
Chairman of the Resource Committee
The honorable the Chief Secretary.
