Dear Sir
The accompanying letter of Mr Simon Sahner
needs no comment from me further than that I have much pleasure in testifying to
his uniform steadiness industry sobriety & good character. I have known him ever since
I have been resident here — he has a good constitution, is a thorough good axe man
& a a
sure marksman, understands horses & is an experienced intelligent bushman. As far
as my judgement goes he is just the man I should consider particularly fitted to make
one of an exploring party
& as such I most
conscientiously
recommend him to the notice of yourself & the committee

i.e. the party being put together for what became known as the Burke & Wills Exploring
Expedition, 1860-1. Sahner was not appointed to the Expedition party; see list of
expedition members selected by Robert O'Hara Burke in M et al. to the Royal Society of Victoria, December 1860 (in this edition as 60-12-00).
I am
Dear Sir
Yours respectfully
Harley Goodall
PS
There is one point which I have not alluded to which I think will strongly recommend
him to the Committee — he is an intelligent educated man yet willing &
thoro'ly capable
of taking a subordinate position.
