On 14 September 1859 the Rev. F. Divorty wrote to O'Shanassy on behalf of the Presbyterian Church of South Yarra, of which he was Minister, 'that you will be pleased to allow them the use of the Botanical Gardens for the purpose of holding a Fancy Bazaar, on the 5th day of November next, being the day appointed for the Horticultural Society's Flower Show. I have the honor further to state that, in the event of this privilege being granted, it is proposed to carry out the above object by erecting a Tent or Marquee in such locality as those in charge of the Gardens may be pleased to direct.' O'Shanassy instructed on 16 September: 'acknowledge and write to Dr Mueller to know if he has any grounds for refusal, if not the request should be complied with' (M59/9546, unit 747, VPRS 1189, PROV).
