Letter not found. For the text given here, see Argus, 2 September 1859, p. 4 (repeated word for word in South Australian advertiser, 8 September 1859, p. 3). M’s letter was read at a meeting of the Commissioners of Sewers and Water Supply, Melbourne, on 1 September. The Commissioners ‘directed that 1 lb. of the seed should be forwarded to Dr. Mueller, and requested that he would recommend a person to superintend the sowing of the seed at the Yan Yean reservoir’.
A report in the Herald (Melbourne), 2 September 1859, p. 5, of the same meeting of the Commissioners might refer to a different letter on this matter: ‘A letter was read from Dr. Mueller stating that he had just received some water cress seed from England for planting along the banks of the Yan Yean reservoir.’
[A letter was read from Dr. Mueller, the Government Botanist, requesting the donation of a portion of watercress seed lately imported from England, through the agency of Mr. Commissioner Powlett, from Mr. Harrison, nurseryman to the Queen, in order to its being sown in the Botanic Gardens.]
