At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Zoological Gardens held on 18 July
1859, Thomas Embling ordered that circulars be printed to be distributed to ships'
captains, inviting them to contribute to the menagerie. A proof of the circular (presumably
based on the notice published in the Gazette) was tabled at the committee meeting held on 2 September and M was instructed to
put it into the form of a letter with alteration of the wording. The circular was
finally passed for printing at a meeting held on 6 September. At the 1 December meeting
it was reported that 50 copies of the circular had been sent to the Chamber of Commerce,
and copies also to Messrs Inglis Adam & Gresham, Dove & Oswald, Bright Brothers and
Messrs Newell, Hooper & Stephen [i.e. Stevens] (Unit 2, VPRS 2223, Public Record Office,
Victoria). No copies of this circular have been found.
