At a meeting of the Management Committee of the Zoological Gardens held on 1 July
1859, M was directed to write to the Chief Secretary 'for the sum of £200 to be transmitted
to Sir George Grey as a fund for defraying such expenses as his Excellency's plan
of transmitting South African animals to this establishment would incur' (Unit 2,
