My dear Professor Asa Gray.
I beg to acknowledge the arrival of the specimens & seeds, which so kindfully forwarded
& which have given me the greatest pleasure. The specimens particularly will, — from
the hands of so many celebrated Botanists — of great value to our collections, which
are excessively poor in N. American plants. Will you, dear Sir, allow me to suggest,
that any future sending you may favor me with should be packed in a hermetically closed
case, because for instance in your last collection many specimens were greatly mildewed,
which is a pity when one thinks how beautiful they must have been before damaged.
I have no doubt you received by this time my consignment of books, plants & seeds,
which I forwarded some months ago.

With sincerest regard dear Professor
your very humble & attached
Ferd. Mueller.
