Melbourne bot. & zool Garden,
10. Dec. 1858.
Sir
In returning Mr Harris letter
complaining of wood of his being stolen and found in Bailiff Martyn's yard, I deeply
regret, that so disgraceful an occurrence should have happened on an establishment
under my administration, and this regret is augmented as I can offer no remark in
extenuation of the charge.

See F. Powlett to M, 10 December 1858.
I may be permitted to state, that some weeks ago wood was offered by me to Martyn,
as I was anxious to clear the ground in a part of the garden, of which offer he did
not avail himself, altho' at this season of the year daily many hours are available
for him to attend to his domestic requirements.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
your most obedient servant
Ferd. Mueller.
