I have the honor to inform you, that the Committee appointed for the administration of the zoological gardens recommends, that out of the funds voted for that establishment the sum of eight-hundred pounds Sterling £800 may be devoted for the completion of the fence around the area granted to the Gardens, and that you would be pleased, if this proposition should be favored with your approval, to place for the above purpose the sum mentioned at the disposal of the hon. the Chief Commissioner of public works.

On 9 August 1858 the Under Secretary, J. Moore, asked the Commissioner of Public Works to advertise for a tender 'and give authority to him'. The contract for fencing the Zoological Gardens was won by W. Murray & Co. for the sum of £590. The contract was charged against the grant in aid of the Zoological Society.
