An expenditure of £30 for the purchase and a further £20 for the removal of the house to the Botanic Garden was subsequently approved (see M to C. Duffy, 30 July 1858, and T. Balmain to M, 13 August 1858). In his monthly report at the beginning of September 1858, M reported that the cottage had been transferred to the Garden, where it would be 'an additional security against pilfering and particularly guard the future contents of the Palm-house'; see M to J.
