The Melbourne Botanic and Zoological Gardens estimates for 1859 (ordered to be printed 14 October 1858) included £6,200 for salary and wages (M's salary as Government Botanist with quarters was £600), £5,260 for contingencies, £1000 towards the erection of a museum and lecture room, £600 for the erection of lodges at the Zoological Gardens, £1000 for materials for planting and draining the Zoological Gardens and £500 for cages and stables for animals. The sum of £500 for contingencies was later added to the estimates (ordered to be printed 3 February 1859).
