MS annotation: ‘Recd July 20th’.
Sir
I have to express my deep gratitude to the Royal Geographical Society of London, for
the unexpected distinction, which was kindfully conferred on me by enrolling my name
into the list of its members,
and I pray that you will especially express my sentiments of gratitude to the distinguished
Count Strzelecki & Sir Roderick Murchison, who have given in supporting my election
such an additional lustre to my new honors.

M was nominated for Fellowship of the RGS on 11 January 1858; see P. Strzelecki and
others to the Royal Geographical Society, 11 January 1858 (in this edition as M58-01-11).
He was elected on 25 January 1858.
It will be scarcely necessary to express my readiness to share as far as my humble
power permits in the labours of one of the most useful & celebrated societies in the
world and thus to respond to the confidence placed in the usefulness of my future
services.
Most humbly your's
Ferd. Mueller.
