Letter not found; item is a register entry only, recording receipt of M’s letter on
28 January, which was probably the day on which it was sent. Though the register records
the date of M’s letter as 25 January, it is unlikely to have taken so long to arrive;
most entries record the arrival of letters either on the same day as they were written,
or the day after. M’s ‘8’ is often difficult to distinguish from his ‘5’. See also
M to W. Haines, 21 January 1858, in which M indicates that he expects to return at
the end of the month, and J. Moore to M, 21 January 1858 (in this edition as 58-01-21a).
