MELBOURNE BOTANICAL GARDENS.
To the Editor of the Argus.
Sir, —
As probably a numerous attendance at the bazaar to be held to-morrow again in the Botanical Gardens will reward the great exertions of so many benevolent ladies for a noble purpose,
2
In the expectation that the bazaar would attract a large crowd, Henry Kay, the Clerk of the Executive Council, wrote to the Police Chief, Charles MaMahon, to ask somewhat diffidently whether some police constables could be assigned to the Botanic Garden to help maintain order, and the request was granted (Unit 1, VPRS 1199 Chief Commissioner's inward correspondence, VA 724 Victoria Police, Public Record Office, Victoria).
I hope you will kindly permit me to draw, through your esteemed paper, the attention of those visitors who value our acquisition of very rare plants to a beautiful specimen of the New Zealand palm lily (Cordyline Australis), now for the first time flowering in this establishment. It is very conspicuous in the north eastern portion of the garden, near the lagoon.
Mr. Johnson, the band-master, kindly informs us that we shall enjoy the following music to-morrow:—
March — Leichhardt's — Marsh.
Overture — Fidelio — Beethoven.
Cavatina — Sonnambula — Bellini.
Waltz — Werber zum Tanz — Labitzki.
Selection — Stabat Mater — Rossini.
Quadrille — Como — D'Albert.
Harmonious Blacksmith (by desire) — Handel.
Polka — Young Couple — Coote.
Selection — Irish Melodies (by desire) — Johnson.
Galop — Austrian.
Most obediently yours,
FREDK
