Pacific commercial advertiser (Honolulu), 14 August 1856, p. 2. The letter is dated from the known movements of
the schooner Vaquero, which was cleared to Melbourne on 27 August 1855 (see Polynesian [Honolulu], 1 September 1855, p. 2), arriving there on 9 November (Argus, 10 November 1855, p.4); it then sailed for Calcutta on 13 December (Argus, 14 December 1855, p. 4), arriving there on 4 February 1856 (Argus, 30 April 1856, p. 4). It left Calcutta for Melbourne on 12 March 1856, arriving
on 9 May (Argus, 10 May 1856, p. 4), and was 'entered outwards' for San Francisco via Honolulu on
9 June 1856. It arrived in Honolulu on 2 August 1876 (Pacific commercial advertiser [Honolulu], 7 August 1856, p. 2). Marshall’s address was delivered at the annual
meeting of the Society, held on 29 July 1856 (Polynesian [Honolulu], 2 August 1856, p. 50).

Captain Newell of the Vaquero corresponded with M; see M to J. O'Shanassy, 1 May 1858 (in this edition as 58-05-01a). However, no letters have been found.
