Letter not found. For the text given here, see Argus, 13 March 1856, p. 5. Augustus Greeves made this remark to the Legislative Council of Victoria on 12 March 1856 while arguing, during a discussion of the Estimates for the Botanic Garden, that the superintendent of the Garden should not be allowed to ‘travel about’. Greeves added: ‘It must be remembered that that gentleman [i.e. Mueller] was absent on leave without salary, and it would not be fair to place another gentleman in a position of advantage over that eminent botanist.’
M’s letter to Greeves must have been written while he was in the Moreton Bay district with the remainder of the North Australian Exploring Expedition between 22 July and 12 August 1855.
[Dr. Mueller was already out on a search for new plants in the whole of the Moreton Bay district, and he had been informed by that gentleman that his search was eminently successful, and that it was his desire at the termination of his labors to benefit Victoria by his discoveries, and return and settle here.]
