I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 30 May forwarding a Schedule of expenditure for your department for the current year, and requesting instructions.

In reply the governor desires me to inform you that he regrets the reduced state of finances of the Colony will compel His Excellency to abolish the office of Government Botanist at the end of the present month. I am to request therefore that you will be good enough to amend the Schedule of expenditure according to this notice, and submit it again to this office as early as possible.

On 23 June 1855 Moore wrote to the Auditor General: 'I am desired by H.E. the Governor to inform you that on the 1st July next the Salaries of Dr Mueller the Government Botanist and of his staff are to cease Dr Muëller having obtained leave of absence for a period of 18 months to accompany the northern Exploring Expedition' (No. 1092, unit 3, pp. 324-5, VPRS 3208, PROV).
