Melbourne, Collin street
N. 70. East.
7th October 1853.
Sir,
Being engaged in preparing for a botanical exploration of the interior of this province, I would feel greatly obliged, if you could furnish me with a partial copy of your map of this colony.
My route will be from here to the Grampians, thence either along the Avoca or the Wimmera to the Murray, which river, I shall follow up, if possible, to its sources, travelling thence through the Australian alps either across to Omeo or Maneroo.
A outline of this parts of the country on tracing paper will be, I believe, sufficient for my purpose.
I need not say, Sir, how much my expedition by such a guidance will be facilitated, and I shall feel happy, could I, by measuring the altitude of the principal mountains contribute towards your maps.
I have the honour, to be, Sir,
your most obed. and humble servant
Dr. Ferd. Mueller,
Gov. Botanist
The Surveyor General.
