Die Motive, verehrter Herr, welche mich bestimmen, diese Worte an Sie zu richten, entsprangen aus dem Wunsche, Ihnen für die schöne "Lübeckische Flora", mit welcher Sie die Wissenschaft beschenkt u. namentlich den innländischen Botanikern eine hohe Freude bereitet haben, meinen geziemenden Dank auszusprechen, indem Sie uns nicht allein über einen der schönsten Punkte unsres Landes bot. Aufklärung verschafften, sondern auch durch eigne Untersuchung und scharfe Charakteristik der Pflanzen ein neues Hülfsmittel für das Studium derselben gereicht haben, ein Studium, welches uns in seiner Erhabenheit nur durch die Überzeugung entgegentritt, dass man für seine Erleichterung und für seine Verbreitung willig seine Kräfte geopfert habe.
Während der wenigen Jahre, seit welchen ich der Pflanzenkunde huldigte, haben mich diese Principien geleitet; aber es ist mir bei meinen Forschungen recht deutlich geworden, welch' eine Fülle von Geisteskräften erforderlich sei, um in Flora's Zauberreich Nutzen zu stiften, und ich muss es gestehen, dass diese Erfahrung wohl geeignet ist, den besten Willen, wenn ihm nicht die Kräfte des Geistes das Gleichgewicht halten, zu entmuthigen.
Dennoch war ich seit jener Zeit bemüht, die Schwierigkeiten zu besiegen, welche mir bei dem Mangel hinlänglicher bot. Mittel und eines guten Unterrichts in doppelter Zahl entgegentraten, mir über die Vegetation des Kreises, in welchem ich lebe, Klarheit zu verschaffen, und das erste Erfordernis für botanische Untersuchungen, ein gutes Herbarium anzulegen.
Durch Austausch und Ankauf ist es mir gelungen die Zahl meiner Pflanzen auf etwa 5000 Arten zu erheben, und der Wunsch nun, nach und nach ein recht pflanzenreiches Herbarium zu gewinnen, veranlasst mich, Ihnen die Auswechselung einiger Pflanzen anzutragen, und während ich mich über die Pflanzen Schätze, welche Flora nicht spärlich über diese Steppen ausgestreut hat, gleich näher aussprechen werde, sei es mir erlaubt, folgende Gewächse [evl] Ihrer Güte in Anspruch zu nehmen, welche unserer Gegend entweder ganz fehlen, oder doch von mir nicht wieder gefunden werden konnten.

The motive, dear Sir, which induces me to address these words to you, sprang from the wish to express my fitting gratitude for the beautiful Lübeckische Flora,

which you have presented to Science, thus giving great pleasure to local botanists. In it you have not only provided a botanical elucidation of one of the most beautiful parts of our country, but have also offered a new resource for its study through your own research and accurate characterisation of the plants, a study the sublimity of which one can confront only in the conviction, that one has willingly offered one's strength towards its facilitation and its dissemination.
These principles have guided me during the few years in which I have devoted myself to botany. It has become very clear to me in the course of my researches, however, what an abundance of mental powers is required to be of service in Flora's magic world. I must confess that this realisation is well suited to discourage the best intentions, if the necessary mental powers do not provide the balance.
Nevertheless, I have striven since that time to conquer the difficulties which confronted me doubly due to a lack of adequate botanical resources and good instruction, to obtain a clear picture of the vegetation of the area in which I live, and to commence a good herbarium, the first requirement for botanical research.
Through exchange and purchase I have succeeded in increasing the number of my plants to about 5000 species. Now the wish to build up a herbarium as rich in plants as possible induces me to suggest to you the exchange of a few plants. While I will say more in a moment about the botanical treasures, which Flora has scattered not at all sparingly about these meadows, I may possibly be permitted to engage your kindness about the following plants, which are either completely lacking in this area, or which I, at least, was unable to locate again.

for determination, which I obtained through a seaman. Its habitat is unknown to me, and I did not want to attempt its identification due to a lack of adequate literary resources.
I would like to use this opportunity for the friendly request, that you might soon commence work on the intended continuation of Lübeck's Flora by the publication of your cryptogams. I believe I can assure you in advance that by it you would not only earn the gratitude of contemporary botanists, but also gain many young friends for these lower organisms.
