LIeber Ferdinand.

Noch habe ich nicht an Dir geschrieben nun wollte ich doch mal den Versuch machen. Im Weihnachten haben wir uns alle recht amüsiert wir sind so reichlich beschenkt dass wir fast alles darüber vergassen. Georg hat eine Jag-Tasche gekricht mit 5 Taschen. Marie und Ich haben beide einen Mantel und ein Netz und eine hüpsche Puppe gekricht. Heinrich hat einen bunten Harlekin erhalten. Ferdinand hat einen Armbogen und ein Schachspil. Ernst hat ein Dammbrett gekricht. Die kleine Louise ist nun so niedlich, sie kann schon ganz alleine laufen sie spricht auch schon einige Wörter. Lieber Ferdinand weisst Du auch schon das Onkel den Sekretär gewonnen hat? Onkel hat nun auch die Fähre Zeit Lebens erhalten. Viele Grüsse von uns alle.

Dear Ferdinand,

I have not written to you before, but now I do want to make the attempt. We have all enjoyed Christmas very much, we all received so many presents that we almost forgot everything else over them. Georg got a game-bag with 5 pockets. Marie and I each received an overcoat and a net and a pretty doll. Heinrich got a colourful harlequin. Ferdinand a crossbow and a chess game. Ernst got a draught board. Little Louise

is so sweet now, she can already walk all by herself alone, and she can already say a few words. Dear Ferdinand, have you already heard that Uncle has won the secretaire?

Probably in a sharpshooting contest. In a letter to Clara Wehl and Bertha Doughty and their husbands, 26 February 1857 (M57-02-26 in this edition), Johann F. Mertens wrote of another piece of furniture he won in such a shooting contest.

Also Uncle has now got the Ferry for the rest of his life.
