Ich möchte Sie darauf aufmerksam machen, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, dass Mr Borchgrevink nahe Cape Adare (also weit innerhalb des antarctischen circles und nicht sehr fern von Mount Erebus) während der Fahrt des Norwegischen Dampfschiffs "Antarctic" drei Arten von Algen fand und auch kleine Polster einer Land-Pflanze, diese letztere aber ohne fructification, jedenfalls aber auch cryptogamisch. I would like to make you aware, highly esteemed Professor, that Mr Borchgrevink near Cape Adare (therefore far inside the Antarctic Circle and not very far from Mount Erebus) during the voyage of the Norwegian steamer "Antarctic" found three species of algae and also small cushions of a land plant, the latter, however, without fruit, but at any rate also cryptogamic. Captain Christisen, however, left our harbour so quickly that I did not come on board and is now on the return voyage round the Cape of Good Hope to Tromsoe.

I would suggest sending a letter or a telegram for him to Tönsberg, so that you obtain these 3 algae species for scientific utilization, that I have never seen here. Perhaps he has previously already promised them to a Norwegian savant, but these 3 algae, that are important for plant geography, would easily be obtained for you as grandmaster of algal studies for naming.

Undoubtedly still other algae occur in the South Polar sea. Sir Jos. Hooker landed, but not on Possession Island where these marine plants were found.

While travelling with James Clark Ross's south-polar expedition, 1840-3, Hooker landed on two small islets in the Ross Sea and on Cockburn's Island near the Antarctic Peninsula. Kristensen's party in 1895 landed on Possession Island, on the coast of Victoria Land.
