Gestern, hochgeehrter Herr Professor, kamen vom Smithsonian Institute die beiden so werthvollen Packete Hawaia-Farne hier an, wofür ich meinen besten Dank ausspreche. Ich werde streben, eine entsprechende Gegengabe zu liefern, doch kann dies nur nach und nach geschehen.

Bei dieser Gelegenheit möchte ich auch noch auf eine von Ihnen und unserem Freund Prof Drude an mich gerichtetes Schreiben eingehen, in welchem Sie meine Unterstützung Seitens Australiens für eine neue Phytogeographie wünschen. Ich schrieb Drude damals, dass ich soviel Zeit dafür frei machen wolle, als die eingehende Beantwortung bestimmter Fragen erfordern möchte. Damit wäre auch die Schwierigkeit überwunden, zu wissen, in welchen besonderen Beziehungen Sie die Auskunft auch von hier wünschen. Die Beiträge aus allen Theilen der Erde müssten doch nach irgend einer Norm ausgearbeitet werden, u daher wäre ein Schema Ihrerseits unentbehrlich, um Gleichformigkeit zu erzielen.

Wie schade, dass die beiden grossen Nachschlage-Werke meines Freundes Pritzel nicht fortgesetzt werden können. Welchen unendlichen Dank würde sich irgend Jemand dadurch erwerben. Ich fürchte, dass es bald ausserhalb Deutschland geschehen wird.

Wie traurig man wird, wenn man an den armen Hellwig denkt.

Bei genauer Durchsicht finde ich noch andere schöne Sachen in den 2 Packeten für Alles besten Dank.

Ich sende eben einige Myrtaceen an Sie ab. Anderes soll folgen.

Yesterday, highly esteemed Professor, the two so valuable parcels of Hawaii ferns arrived here from the Smithsonian Institute, for which I express my best thanks. I shall strive to produce an appropriate return gift, but this can only happen by and by.

On this occasion I would also like still to consider a letter directed to me from you and our friend Prof. Drude, in which you wish my support on the part of Australia for a new phytogeography. At the time I wrote to Drude

that I will make as much time free for it as the careful answering of particular questions may take. In that way the difficulties would also be overcome of knowing in what particular respect you wish the information also from here. The contributions from all parts of the earth must surely be prepared according to some kind of standard, and therefore a framework on your part was indispensible to achieve uniformity.

It would appear that Engler and Drude had contacted M about what would become Engler & Drude (1896-1923). The series did not contain a monograph on the complete Australian vegetation, although Diels (1906) on WA south of the Tropic of Capricorn appeared as volume 7.

A pity that both the great reference works of friend Pritzel are not able to be continued. What unending thanks would someone get as a result. I fear that it will soon happen outside Germany.

Pritzel published two major index works. His index to the botanical literature, Pritzel (1851), was supplemented by Additamenta by various authors up until 1864 (see TL2), with a second edition begun by Pritzel as Pritzel (1872) but completed in 1877 by Jessen. Pritzel (1855), second edition 1865, was his index to illustrations of plant species. M may have had in mind the example of B. Jackson (1881), the origins of which are described in B. Jackson (1880), as an example of continuations issued outside Germany.

How sad one is when one thinks of poor Hellwig.

Franz Hellwig died of dysentery at Finschhafen, German New Guinea, in June 1889; see Jahresbericht der Schlesischen Gesellschaft für Vaterländische Kultur, 1890, p. 158.

With more thorough perusal I find even more fine things in the 2 parcels for all of which best thanks.
