Gestern, edler Freund, langte die schöne und ausgedehnte Abhandlung an, welche Sie über geliefert habe. Es ist ein hochwichtiger Beitrag zur Phytologie, besonders der von Australien. Es freuet mich auch besonders im Interesse meiner Anstalt, dass Sie das von mir kommende Material namlich bezeichnet haben. Möge die göttliche Vorsehung Ihnen Kraft noch recht lange verleihen, um Ihre grossen Arbeiten und die Ihres unvergesslichen Vaters weiter zu führen!

Es sind gerade 50 Jahre, seit ich meine Pflanzen-Studien begann, und zwar im April 1840! u an der Grenze Scandinaviens, wo ich schon damals ausgedehnte Excursionen und bald nachher Reisen nach Sylt, Fehmarn u sw. unternahm.

Ich werde mich bemühen, Ihnen auch noch mehr Material von zu verschaffen.

I am also particularly pleased, in the interest of my institution, that you have especially indicated the material coming from me. May Divine Providence grant you strength for a long time yet to carry on further your great work and that of your unforgettable father!

It is just 50 years since I began my studies of plants, and indeed in April 1840 and to the boundary of Scandinavia, where I already at that time undertook extensive excursions and soon afterwards travels to Sylt, Fehmarn and so on.

Islands off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, respectively in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. M's dating suggests that he linked his first botanical studies to his starting his apprenticeship at Becker's pharmacy in Husum, in April 1840. See Voigt & Sinkora (1996).
