MS black-edged; M's brother-in-law George Doughty died on 26 March 1890.
From the enclosed you will see, dear Mr Bates, how sad an accident occured to poor
Mr Gribble.
I wrote to him that you would not press him for some little time for payment, so
that he could recover meanwhile from his losses and distress.

See J. Gribble to M, 2 April 1890.
He is sure, to come early up to his obligations at the RGS.
Had not the recent extra-expenses during the Melbourne-meeting of the Austral. Association
for the Advancement of Science and other late unforeseen obligations exhausted my
slender current means, I would render payment for the Rev. Gentleman myself at once.

Annual fees were £2, plus a £3 admission fee. Gribble was elected on 20 January 1890;
see his nomination certificate, November 1889 (in this edition as 89-11-00). He paid
the fees in September 1890.
Regardfully
your
Ferd von Mueller.
