To Baron von Mueller
&c &c.
Dear Sir,
At last I have been able to prepare a set of duplicate Algae for you, which go by this same post. The list will shew you that they are not quite complete but as nearly so as I can at present make them — & I hope they are correctly identified — but I am unfortunately very ignorant on the subject of Algae.
If you would be kind enough to give me an introduction to Professor Agardh, with his postal address, I could send him specimens direct, & would let you have any duplicates of fresh species. Would that suit your purpose & perhaps save you trouble? Of the desired Echloni a

Ecklonia ?
I have not yet come across any more specimens. There were a great many specimens in my original parcel of which I had not duplicates, & should have liked to have them returned with their names. But if they are of use to the Professor it is better he should have the benefit of them of course.
I am enclosing a specimen of a shrub found by Dr. Smyth of Latrobe, at Green's Creek a few miles inland from Port Sorell.

All places named are in Tas.
It was sent to me during the winter & is very brittle. When fresh is must be a pretty thing, & the Doctor thinks it rare if not new. I have not been able to identify it at all, but it may be well known, for all that — & your verdict will be gratefully received.
With kind regards & all best wishes, I remain
yours sincerely
Mary Lodder.
Tasmanian Algae, as named from Prof. Agardh's list.

See also the undated list of J. Agardh's identifications of an earlier sending of Lodder's algae, sent with J. Agardh to M, 29 September 1889 (in this edition as 89-09-29a), collected at the mouth of the Leven River, N. Tasmania, at M's request. See M to J. Agardh, 30 June 1889, announcing the dispatch of two packets of algae from Lodder. M sent copies of the lists of identifications to the collectors where requested, as he evidently did in this case. Except for differences in the spelling of some names, indicated in the notes below, the list prepared by Lodder matches that in Agardh's list.
For Baron von Mueller.
From M. Lodder, Ulverstone, N. Tas. Dec. 1889.
5
Lodder's list was arranged in two columns; '27. Rhodophyllus membranacea' is the last entry in the left column.
x I have no duplicate of no 1. which is Sporochnus pedunculatus .
Other omitted numbers are those of which the Baron had already given the names.

The three numbers are bracketed, with the comment adjacent to the bracket.

Harvey (1860) wrote the section on algae in J. Hooker (1860); this species does not appear under this name or either of the synonyms listed in AlgaeBase (accessed 16 August 2023). J. Agardh (1848-1901), vol. 2, p. 483 (1851) made this combination.
26.
Ptilonia australiensis
9
Agardh's list had australasica.

10
Agardh's list had Rhodophyllis.

Polysiphonia caniculata
11
In the list cited in n. 4 above, Agardh had identified no. 35 as Polysiphonia cancellata .
36. 37.
Plocamium costatum
38 & 36 are given as Phacelocarpus in Prof. Agardh's list, but there has been some confusion as my specimens are Plocamium costatum apparently!
12
No. 38 in Agardh's list was ' = 36. cui inest Phacelocarpus' [in which Phacelocarpus is present]. Apparently the copy of Agardh's list provided for Lodder had not indicated this, or Lodder had not understood the implications.
39.
Plocamium procerum
40.
Griffithsia elongata
41.
Sphacelaria paniculata

= 23. Wrangelia clavigera
43 & 44.
Plocamium angustatum

Corallina Cuvieri
46.
Amphora
13
Agardh's list had Amphiroa. Lodder's comment refers to Harvey (1860), p. 309, and suggests that the error was in the list supplied to her.

This seems to be Amphiroa in Hooker's work.
