Es is Mir mitgetheilt werden dass die Königliche Akademie der Wissenschaften in London Sie durch die Verleihung der goldenen Medaille geeh. hat. Ich habe mit um so grössere Freude und Genugthuung von dieser Auszeichnung Kenntniss genommen, als dieselbe einem von Mir hochgeschäzten Landes-Angehörigen zu Theil geworden ist, der in seinen angesehenen Stellung die er seit vielen Jahren im Auslande bekleidet; sich des deutschen Vaterlands gern erinnert und seine Liebe zum Heimathlande und seinem Fürstenhause mehrfach in […] Weise bethätigt hat. I have been informed that the Royal Society of London has honoured you by the award of the gold medal.

MS annotation: 'P.N. Die Verleihung erfolgte in Veranlassung eines den Baron von Mueller betreffenden Artikels in der Australischen Zeitung auf Vortrag des Staatsministeriums. Der Exemplar der gn Zeitung &c ist zu den Acten des Staatsministerium genommen' [The award followed by reason of an article in an Australian newspaper concerning Baron von Mueller on report of the Ministry of State. The copy of the said newspaper is in the files of the Ministry of State]. The specific newspaper referred to, with the announcement of the award of a Royal Medal to M, has not been identified. The award of 'one of the medals' was widely reported in Australian newspapers in November and December 1888, but not until February 1889 were the full details published, including the citation read at the meeting of the Royal Society of London at which the award was announced; see Leader (Melbourne), 9 February 1889, pp. 14-15.

I have noted this honour with all the greater pleasure and satisfaction, as it is bestowed on a subject greatly esteemed by me, who in his respected position that he held for many years in a foreign country gladly remembers the German fatherland and has given practical proof of his love for his home country and princely house many times in […] manner. Being gratefully mindful of it, I desire to also give you proof of my particular high esteem and ask you to accept from me the enclosed gold medal with the inscription 'to the sciences and arts' as the most honourable visible token of recognition for […] of science to be awarded by me.
