I must apply for leave of absence on the ground of illness my medical adviser wishing me to enjoy complete rest from indoor-work. His certificate is to that effect.

There is an annotation dated 20 March 1889: 'Note the Certificate will be forwarded to day to the Baron. Mr. Renner leaves to morrow but will of course see the Baron before leaving. C. F.' [i.e. Charles French Snr; it is very unlikely, given the ages of the people involved, that Charles H. French would have been involved]. See also M to T .Wilson, 20 March 1889, and notes thereto.
