Following the funeral of Henry Keiley on 9 March,
a meeting of a few of the friends of the deceased gentleman, called together by Mr. Julius Herz, was held at Mrs. Lane's City Club Hotel. Baron von Mueller took the chair. It was proposed by Mr. Julian Thomas, seconded by Mr. Alfred Plumpton, "That subscription lists be opened for the purpose of obtaining a sum of not less than £1000 for the benefit of the widow of the late Mr. Henry Keiley." An influential committee, including the secretaries of the three metropolitan musical societies, was formed, with Baron von Mueller as chairman, Mr. John Law as hon, treasurer, and Mr. Julius Herz as hon. secretary. A sum of £220 was collected in the room, including £25 from Mrs. Lane. A suggestion was made at this meeting that some inquiries should be made as to the disposal of the Caxton Fund, which some years ago was invested in the hands of trustees for the benefit of distressed journalists and their families and remains "invested" ( Age , 11 March 1889, p.4).
Ferd. Von Mueller.
