Sollten Sie, geehrter Herr Tepper, auch Exemplare von dem Herrn Prof. Tate eingehändigt haben, so möchte ich Sie besonders bitten, ihm zu sagen, dass Ihr Material zum Theil aus besteht.

Das Vorkommen dieses Mooses in Süd-Austr. habe ich durch eigne Untersuchung ermittelt, u gab ich Ihnen eine Notiz in dieser Hinsicht im vorigen Jahre, welche Sie — wenn ich nicht irre — veröffentlichen. Dies Moos ist auch als u bekannt, aber sehr selten .

Mein Original Material von ist verlegt, und da ich vor Mitte Januar keine Zeit für special Arbeiten an Pflanzen haben werde, kann ich das ganze Räthsel nicht lösen. Sollte Hr Prof Tate Ihre nicht erhalten haben, so kann ja einfach die Pflanze in seinem Verzeichniss ausgelassen werden, bis ich später eingehend die Sache selbst besprechen kann.

Auch den kritischen werde ich gern dort zurückgelegt sehen, da ich ihn mit mehreren ausser austr . Arten vergleichen möchte; ich habe ihn von mehreren Standorten. Bemerken Sie dem Herrn Professor auch, dass etwaige andere unrichtige Namens Benennungen in Ihrer Sammlung sich aus drei Gründen erklären lassen:

1. weil ich oft in später Abend — oder selbst Nachtstunden solche Benennungen von zugeschickten Pflanzen vorzunehmen habe, ermüdet von der Routine Arbeiten des Tags; was Sie gütig bei passender Gelegenheit in irgendeinen Ihrer Aufsätze bemerken könnten.

2. weil ich seit dem unglücklichen u unverdienten Zerstücklung meines Departements (grossentheils durch grausame u denklose Agitationen in Adelaide herbeigeführt) so entfernt von meinem Museum wohne, dass es sehr zeitrauband u oft unmöglich ist, Vergleiche mit original Ex. anzustellen. 3. weil offenbar Nummern in Ihrer Sammlung verwechselt sind, so z. B. die mehreren Wasser-Pflanzen u zwar solchen die ich schon vor fast 50 Jahren genau in Europe studirte, so . Oft waren Ihre Ex auch so klein, u so unvollständig, dass man leicht dadurch irre geführt werden konnte, und es ist nach langer Zwischenzeit sehr mühsam in den grossen Sammlungen hier die blühenden u die Frucht tragende Ex. zusammenzufinden aber das wäre ja für Vallisneria eine Unmöglichkeit . Sie haben aber im Allgemeinen sehr brav gesammelt, und sich um die Flora S.A. hochverdient gemacht!

Falls Sie Ihre Ferien zum Herkommen für die Welt-Austellung selbst wählen können, so würde ich rathen, Ihren Besuch gegen Ende Januar zu machen. Vorher könnte ich nur wenig selbst für Sie frei sein.

Should you, esteemed Mr Tepper, also have submitted specimens of to Professor Tate, I should like to ask you particularly to tell him that your material in part consists of .

I have determined the occurrence of this moss in South Australia through my own investigation and I gave you a note in this regard last year, which you — if I am not mistaken — published.

See M to O. Tepper, 30 June 1886 (in this edition as 86-06-30a), in which M asked Tepper not to communicate the determination to the Royal Society. M listed the species in B87.03.03, p. 58, where the credit for the collection from 'Spencer Gulf' is given to 'C. Mueller'.

This moss is also known as and , but very rarely .

My original material of is mislaid, and since I'll have no time for special work on plants before the middle of January, I cannot solve the whole puzzle. Should Professor Tate have not received your , the plant can indeed be simply left out of his list until I can review the matter myself thoroughly later.

Also I shall gladly see the critical put aside there, since I should like to compare it with several extra-Australian species; I have it from several localities. Also comment to Professor Tate, that other possibly incorrect name determinations in your collection can be explained on three grounds:

1. because I often have to carry out such naming of sent plants in the late evening — or even night hours, tired from the routine work of the day; this you could kindly mention on suitable occasions in any of your essays.

2. because since the unfortunate and undeserved dismemberment of my department (in great part caused by cruel and thoughtless agitation in Adelaide

) I live so far from my museum, that it is very time consuming and often impossible to make comparisons with original specimens. 3. because obviously numbers in your collection are mixed up, thus e.g. the several water plants and in fact those that I already studied carefully almost 50 years ago in Europe such as . Often your specimens were also so small and so incomplete that one could easily be led into error thereby, and it is very laborious after a long interval to find the flowering and the fruit-bearing specimens together in the large collection here , but that would certainly be an impossibility for Vallisneria. You have, however, in general collected very well and have done great service to the flora of South Australia!
