Ihr früherer Schüler schreibt mir eben von Oxford, edler Freund, dass er Ihnen das Msc. der gesandt, bemerkt aber, dass es dem Bearbeiter der Dilleniaceen zur Entscheidung vorläge, ob dieser Ordnung fortbestehen solle. Wer immer nun die Dilleniaceen bearbeiten wird, kann ja nicht einmal annähernd über diese Frage urtheilen, da ihm die vielen Mittelformen zwischen u , auf welche ich meine sorgfältigen Untersuchungen stützte, nur wenig oder gar nicht zugänglich sein werden. Schon vor 30 Jahren zog ich , , u ein, ging aber zu weit, indem ich auch in einschloss, wozu B. & H eine ächte ( ) gebracht hatten. Wenn diese Zeilen Sie noch zeitig genug erreichen, bitte ich Sie besonders, ja keine Änderung von der ceen zu zu machen. Sie u Ihr Hr Mitherausgeber können mich ja für dieses Beibehalten der ersten verantwortlich machen.

Ich schliesse mich Ihrer Ansicht vollständig an, wenn Sie die neben die Ranunculaceen stellen. Wir alle kennen die Ähnlichkeit mit der Section von , u man wird beim Studium der Blumen von auch an die Monimieen erinnert.

Whoever now will compile the can certainly not even approximately decide this question because the many intermediate forms between and on which I based my thorough investigations will be only little or not at all accessible to him.

The monographer, Gilg (1895), p. 118, included species within Labillardière's of within a section of .

Already 30 years ago I included , and

M made this rearrangement in B62.03.03.

but went too far, having also included in ,

In his Census (B83.03.04), p. 2, M restored as a genus.

Schönland (1894) ('Gedruckt im Mai 1889' [Printed in May 1889]) retained the name, writing (p. 79):

Wir gebrauchen den Namen auf den Rat des Herrn Baron Ferdinand von Mueller. Derselbe hält nämlich die Aufrechterhaltung der Gattung unter den nicht für berechtigt; es ist daher notwendig, der Gattung ihren ursprünglichen Namen, , wieder zu verleihen und ihren jetzigen Namen und damit auch den Namen der Familie fallen zu lassen. [We use the name on the advice of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller. He does not consider the maintenance of the genus among the to be justified; it is therefore necessary to restore the genus to its original name, , and to drop its present name and thus also the name of the family.]

I fully concur with your view, if you put the next to the . We all acknowledge the similarity with the Section of , and in studying the flowers of one is reminded also of the .

Your Oxford friend cannot believe it is correct to place in , but has not read the relevant place in my Fragmenta.

M's argument for moving from Saxifrageae to Stylideae (his later Candollaceae) is in B73.04.02, p. 41; Schönland (1894), p. 83 rejected the view that M expressed to him, that is a genus within ; see M to S. Schonland, May 1888 (in this edition as 88-05-00c).
