Versuchsweise, lieber Herr Professor, habe ich Ihnen ein Päckchen trockner Pflanzen mit dieser Post gesandt, u zwei mehr liegen für die nächsten Posten bereit. Wenn sich diese Methode des Sendens auch dort bei Ankunft als passend erweist d.h., Ihnen die Packete frei zukommen (was ich wissen möchte), so könnten ja mit einiger Regelmässigkeit Sendungen Ihnen zugehen.

Gestern Abend hatten wir in der Gesellschaft der Ärzte einen Vortrag über die Anwendung des Strychnins gegen Schlangen-Gift, eine Entdeckung meines Namens Verwandte Hr. Dr. Aug. Mueller in Yackadandah,

Seine Anwendungs Methode (hypodermisch) ist ja auch vom Physiologstandpunkt ganz richtig, denn den deprimirenden Einflüssen des Opiums, des Physostigma u der Erschlaffung des Nerven Systems aus anderen Gründen wirken wir ja auch oft schon therapeutisch mit Strychin entgegen. Freilich zwei unserer Schlangen-Arten hier haben ein so schnell wirkendes Gift, dass ärztliche Hülfe oft zu spät kommt, und mit der schrecklichen Naja, der in Süd-Asien alljährlich etwa 20000 Menschen Leben erliegen, ist es noch schlimmer, so dass wie ich bemerkte, wohl Strychin Auflösung gradirt für innere Nehmung in Indien zur Hand sein sollte. Ich hatte einen sehr gütigen Brief Ihres ausgezeichneten Collegen Prof J Cohn dessen Beiträge ich stets gleich "beziehe".

As a trial, dear Professor, I have sent you a small parcel of dried plants with this post and two more lie ready for the next post. If this method of sending also proves to be suitable on arrival there, that is, the parcels come to you free (which is what I want to know), then consignments could indeed reach you with some regularity.

Yesterday evening we had a lecture in the Medical Society about the application of strychnine against snake poison, a discovery of my namesake Dr Aug. Mueller in Yackandandah.

August Mueller. See A. Mueller to M, 14 February 1888 (in this edition as 88-02-14a). The report published in the Australian medical journal, 1888, pp. 164-71, of the meeting of the Medical Society of Victoria held on 4 April 1888 does not mention any discussion of Mueller’s or any other method of treating snakebite. A. Mueller was, however, elected a member of the Society during the meeting, and this may have prompted some unrecorded discussion of his method. His paper was read at the meeting of 2 May 1888 and published as A. Mueller (1888).

His method of application (hypodermic) is indeed also quite correct from a physiological standpoint, because we also often already counteract the depressing influences of opium, of physostigma and the relaxation of the nervous system from other causes therapeutically with strychnine. Of course two of our snake species here have such a quick-acting poison that medical assistance often comes too late and with the terrible Naja, from which in South Asia annually about 20,000 human lives succumb, it is even worse, so that, as I remarked, strychnine solution graduated for internal consumption should be on hand in India.
